“SWAT” Program Helps Chaplains

Military Ministry’s new SWAT (Spiritual Wellness Assistance Team) program helps chaplains serve the needs of thousands of returning warriors and their families at major U.S. installations. “The SWAT program is a way to concentrate several of our seminars, training sessions and other services on one installation and community as it tries to serve the needs of thousands of troops from a large unit returning from Iraq or Afghanistan,” said MG Bob Dees (U.S. Army, Retired), Military Ministry Executive Director. “We have received positive reactions to this idea from chaplains charged with the spiritual support of these troops and their families, but with very limited resources.” Recently, SWAT advance teams have been deployed to Ft. Hood, Texas and Ft. Campbell, KY. During these visits, SWAT leaders meet with chaplains and local pastors and lay people to discuss and plan how to best reach large numbers in the weeks immediately following their return. SWAT programs will look different at each installation or community, based on existing resources and the felt needs of the local chaplains. Typical offerings will include Military Marriage seminars for military couples re-uniting after long deployments and church training conferences to help sensitize and equip church members to minister effectively to the special needs of military families.
